PROPOSAL FOR MUSICAL STUDIO FOR YOUTH IN CAMEROON

PROPOSAL FOR MUSICAL STUDIO FOR YOUTHS IN BOYO DIVISION OF CAMEROON

BACKGROUND OF GOODNESS AND MERCY MISSIONS

Jinkfuin_vern_choir_2

Goodness and Mercy Missions {GMM}, Cameroon is a not for profit organization providing tools for needy people, especially the youth, for a sustainable livelihood. It is located in Jinkfuin, Belo Sub Division, Boyo, Cameroon and is duly registered as a non-profit non-governmental organisation in compliance with Law No 92/006 of 14th August 1992 relating to cooperative societies and Common Initiative Groups and its Degree of application No 92/455/PM of 23 November 1992. The Registration Certificate of Goodness and Mercy Missions is NW/GP/N0 01/08/11739.

The organization’s mission centers on empowering men, women, youths and the disadvantaged with the tools necessary to help them improve the quality of their lives. The organization seeks to ensure that the oppressed, the poor and less privileged live a life of meaning and worth. We highly depend on donors to help us implement our strategies by partnering with us in various ways.

GMM was formed because there was a great demand of the community’s needs. Rural communities in Cameroon continue to suffer not so much because of the economic situation of the country but because of the lack of initiatives for individuals to help themselves and come out of their predicament. GMM was formed to sensitize, create awareness, and educate the community on vital issues plaguing the wellbeing of the society.

OBJECTIVES OF GOODNESS AND MERCY MISSIONS {GMM}:

v     GMM works in partnerships with representative organizations to help the rural poor and empower the community with tools which they can develop to sustain their livelihood.

v     To identify the disadvantaged and the less privileged in Communities and seek possible ways to help them.

v     Provide educational programmes for youths that will give them opportunities for a meaningful life.

v     Empower women to be self reliant.

v     Facilitate community leadership training.

v     Impact the communities as well as individuals with the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ as well as timeless truths of the Bible.

STATEMENT OF NEED

The project at hand is to create a musical studio for youths in the Boyo Division, North West Region of Cameroon. Young people with musical talents in the country have no way of pursuing these abilities due to lack of resources. Producers operating recording studios charge exorbitant fees which creates a major barrier for less privileged persons to explore a career in music.

A positive environment and source of income is necessary for the empowerment of young people and for the development of the community as a whole.  The studio will provide such an outlet, where individuals (or groups) will be able to make a clean living while doing something they enjoy.

Music in Cameroon is used to highlight issues like church, government, marriage and love and is vital for the positive transformation of society.  It is an important tool which facilitates communication to the masses and is useful in promoting cultural unity and happiness within communities.

Even though the project is geared towards young people, older persons who are underprivileged and have talent will also have access to the studio.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES

A case study was conducted in Belo, Njinikom and Fundong Sub Divisions and it was revealed that similar young people who were assisted in producing their albums have been able to record pretty high sales and make good use of the money to help build themselves a better future. Therefore, creating a musical studio for youths in Boyo Division will help more young people to be able to produce albums and become self sufficient in the long run. The studio will also serve as a point where youths who have already produced their albums elsewhere may come to multiply copies of their CD’s at a reasonable rate.  The studio will also put measures in place to guard against piracy.

The studio will provide assistance in seeking innovative ways to market the music locally, regionally and internationally through shops, the internet and eventually radio and television.  The proceeds will fund the operations of the studio and provide the financial resources for musicians to sustain their lives and by extension enhance the communities in which they live.

The main objectives of the project are to:

v     Help the young people develop their talents in music

v     Sustain the growth and development of these talented musicians

v     Encourage the young people to be self sufficient by producing albums that will appeal to the masses hence translate into profits.

v     Provide a positive career alternative for young people with musical talent therefore improving the quality of life

The studio will be set up in Belo Town in Belo Sub Division of Cameroon using rented rooms at The Women’s Rest House Building.

We already have technicians, producers, bookkeepers, administrative staff, etc. in place. The technicians are very qualified and have successfully worked in other studios in Cameroon.

Staff, rents, electricity bills, maintenance and some government taxes will have to be paid. It will be difficult to raise this money from the little that will be charged for the services offered. Therefore we depend on donors and volunteers to support the project.

As soon as the project is underway, we shall organize workshops so that experienced professionals in the field may facilitate workshops and provide advice for success. We are hopeful that this assistance would be donated but acknowledge that it may entail some cost.
